The green haven located in the heart of our community is the West Bloomfield Woods Nature Preserve. A jewel in the landscape of our township, this unique preserve is located along the West Bloomfield Trail, offering a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Open from the crack of dawn until the colors of sunset paint the sky, the Preserve stands out for its recognition as Michigan’s first Urban Wildlife Sanctuary by the National Institute for Urban Wildlife. It’s an idyllic spot for nature enthusiasts, families looking for a peaceful day out, or anyone longing to reconnect with the natural world.

Spanning over 162 acres, the West Bloomfield Woods Nature Preserve is a vital habitat accommodating over 100 bird species alongside majestic white-tail deer, coyote, red fox, and more elusive creatures such as weasel, mink, and salamanders. Visitors are often treated to the sight of white trillium and yellow trout lilies stretching under the canopies of mature oak and hickory, with the added delight of encountering large black walnuts and wild dogwoods. This verdant expanse is not just a Preserve but a vibrant ecosystem brimming with life and beauty at every turn.

Among the amenities designed for visitor comfort and enjoyment, the Preserve includes a generous parking lot to welcome guests from near and far. For nature walks, family outings, or solitary reflection, benches are thoughtfully placed throughout the area. While currently offering seasonal portable restroom facilities, plans are underway to introduce a permanent restroom solution by June 1, 2024, enhancing the visitor experience. An added feature is the wetlands overlook, which invites guests to pause and observe the intricate water-bound ecosystems and their inhabitants.

The Preserve’s trails, while unpaved, beckon adventurers of all ages to explore its depths, guided by interpretive signs that offer insights into the flora, fauna, and ecosystems within. However, in order to maintain the tranquility of this wildlife sanctuary and ensure the safety of its inhabitants, bikes are not permitted on the trails. Whether you’re a seasoned bird watcher, a family in search of quality outdoor time, or simply someone who appreciates the quiet majesty of nature, the West Bloomfield Woods Nature Preserve promises a memorable experience. Let’s cherish and preserve this natural treasure for generations to come, reveling in the wonders it has to offer.
