The green haven located in the heart of our community is the West Bloomfield Woods Nature Preserve. A jewel in the landscape of our township, this unique preserve is located along the West Bloomfield Trail, offering a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Open from the crack of dawn until the colors of sunset paint the sky, the Preserve stands out for its recognition as Michigan’s first Urban Wildlife Sanctuary by the National Institute for Urban Wildlife. Spanning over 162 acres, the West Bloomfield Woods Nature Preserve is a vital habitat accommodating over 100 bird species alongside majestic white-tail deer, coyote, red fox, and more elusive creatures such as weasel, mink, and salamanders. Visitors are often treated to the sight of white trillium and yellow trout lilies stretching under the canopies of mature oak and hickory, with the added delight of encountering large black walnuts and wild dogwoods. Among the amenities designed for visitor comfort and enjoyment, the Preserve includes a generous parking lot to welcome guests from near and far. While currently offering seasonal portable restroom facilities, plans are underway to introduce a permanent restroom solution by June 1, 2024, enhancing the visitor experience. However, in order to maintain the tranquility of this wildlife sanctuary and ensure the safety of its inhabitants, bikes are not permitted on the trails.
